Adi Dassler registered adidas in Herzogenaurach, Germany, in 1949, along with a shoe bearing the three stripes. His focus was equipment for athletes, but some of those designs travelled well beyond their original purpose. The Samba, introduced in 1950 for football on icy and snowy pitches, is one example. That movement from sporting function to everyday dress is part of the brand’s appeal: a shoe can carry its history into an entirely different day.
