Thomas Burberry founded his business in Basingstoke, England, in 1856, with clothing for the British weather in mind. His invention of gabardine in 1879 helped shape the outerwear that followed, including the trench coat. The brand’s history is closely tied to garments with a job to do, and to the details that job leaves behind. A collar turned up against the rain can still make that original purpose feel immediate.
