Clinique grew out of a conversation between beauty editor Carol Phillips and dermatologist Norman Orentreich about whether skincare could be taught as a routine. The brand launched at Saks Fifth Avenue in 1968, with its three-step system of cleansing, exfoliating and moisturising becoming a signature. Even the beauty counter reflected that educational approach, with consultants in white coats. The story behind the bottle is an attempt to make skincare a process people could understand.
