Guccio Gucci opened his first shop in Florence in 1921, following an early ambition to make luggage bearing his name. The house’s bamboo-handled bag arrived in 1947, when a shortage of traditional materials encouraged a different approach. Artisans shaped bamboo over a flame to create its curved handle. It is a small detail with a substantial story, showing how a practical constraint can become a visual signature that outlives the circumstances that produced it.
