Levi Strauss opened his San Francisco dry-goods business in 1853. Twenty years later, he and tailor Jacob Davis received a patent for reinforcing work pants with metal rivets, helping establish the blue jean. The idea began with the practical problem of clothing that needed to withstand strain. A worn denim jacket or a favourite pair of jeans carries that history forward in a personal way, recording use in softened fabric, creases and repairs.
