McDonald’s took shape around Dick and Mac McDonald’s streamlined restaurant in San Bernardino, California. In 1948, the brothers introduced their Speedee Service System, built around a limited menu and a fifteen-cent hamburger. Ray Kroc opened his Des Plaines restaurant in 1955 and helped expand the concept. Behind the Golden Arches is that practical idea of a familiar meal served quickly, whether it marks a lunch break, a road trip or a stop on the way home.
