Nintendo’s beginnings were in playing cards, with Fusajiro Yamauchi making hanafuda in Kyoto in 1889. Its later history moved through arcade games, home consoles and handhelds, including the Game Boy in 1989 and Nintendo Switch in 2017. The formats changed, but play remained the common thread. From a deck of cards to a portable screen, the attraction is the chance to step into a different set of rules, alone or with someone beside you.
